Researchers in Malaysia have discovered that papaya leaves are a possible cure for dengue fever, Bernama reported yesterday.
The study, initiated by Dr S Kathiresan of the Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology University in Kedah, found that leaves of the papaya fruit are high in complex vitamins that might help the bone marrows boost blood platelet production.
Severe dengue can result in life-threatening haemorrhagic fever which results in bleeding and low blood platelet levels.
Dr Kathiresan said mice that were fed ground papaya leaves in an experiment showed a significantly higher platelet count after 72 hours.
According to Bernama, the consumption of papaya leaves or even the juice from the pengaga plant (also known as pennywort) is known to be a local folk remedy for dengue. Agencies
